Dear Mother:
Rob and I slept in this morning and we are waiting for breakfast to digest before we go for a swim. This afternoon we have an invitation to visit the U.S. aircraft carrier U.S. Roosevelt as a result of an invitation from some U.S. sailors we met.
The swimming here is very good with very clean and warm water. Robert goes spearfishing each day and has only caught two fish so far and they were not much bigger than a sardine. We wandered around the old Moorish quarter last night and it is amazing that it stands in such condition. The people sitting out in outdoor cafes are so friendly and almost no one speaks English. The portions at restaurants are so small and people seem to fill up with bread. We buy fresh fruit and vegetables at the market. The tomatoes and cucumbers are so good here. There are oranges, cherries, peaches, apricots all in season at once. We buy strawberries at the market, take them home and eat them…so good!
Robert is good company. I don’t know how he stands me but we manage.
The hotels here are not airconditioned but don’t need to be because there is always a breeze. The mornings and evenings are always cool.
On Monday we head for Symi and if we like it we will remain there for a week. Then off to Crete and Karpathos. Every once in awhile I feel like I am dreaming. It doesn’t seem like I could be so far from home. It is more fun having family than being myself.
Love Margaret
