These funds were immediately lavished on a team of six truly excellent horses, gilt locks for the doors, a tame monkey for the house and a French butler. The young lady’s serfs together with two hundred of his own, were mortgaged for some business transaction. In brief, he was an exemplary landowner, a real paragon.”
