Dearest Barbara: Both Robert and I do not like Crete. We find Cretans surly and grasping not at all like the other islands. So we will take the first boat out of here in three days. It is terribly humid here. We went to a beach some twenty minutes from the pension we are stayingContinue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 25July1971: Crete, Greece: Beef in a Pancake!”

Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 22June1971: Rhodos, Greece: Such Kind and Pleasant People: Two Can Live For $5 a Day!
Dear Barbara: Rhodes is a heavenly place. It is so clean, the Greeks so kind and pleasant. The fruits and vegetables are lovely. The tomatoes and cucumbers are something else. We have a few melons and oranges in our room. On Monday we are going to the island of Symi for a week stay. ItContinue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 22June1971: Rhodos, Greece: Such Kind and Pleasant People: Two Can Live For $5 a Day!”

Dear Andy: We returned from Symi yesterday and tomorrow we leave for Karpathos which is seven hours by ship. I am sitting in a restaurant at the market square waiting for Robert. The market is full of fruit and Robert can eat hisContinue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 9July1971: Rhodes, Greece: Being in Greece is Like Being in Another World and I Love It!”
Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 16July1971: Othos, Karpathos, Greece: At a Village Party!
Dear Barb: You would never believe the setting. I am sitting at an outdoor café with just two tables with a fat Greek lady clothed in head to toe in black with a black scarf all around her head and neck. We were invited by a lady, Poppy, to visit her in a small villageContinue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 16July1971: Othos, Karpathos, Greece: At a Village Party!”
Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 28June1971: Rhodos, Greece: The Town is Lousy with U.S. Sailors
Dear Andrew: We are sitting in an outdoor café waiting for some service for breakfast. It is 9:30 now and they do not open for dinner until 10. They serve orange juice in a can here. And always buns in the morning. They sure eat lots of bread here. Loads of it at every meal.Continue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 28June1971: Rhodos, Greece: The Town is Lousy with U.S. Sailors”

Dear Mother: Rob and I slept in this morning and we are waiting for breakfast to digest before we go for a swim. Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 17July1971: Othos, Karpathos, Greece: The Most Beautiful Greek Island Yet!
Dear Mother: We have been on Karpathos for 9 days and in three more we sail for Crete. This island is the most beautiful Greek island yet. We met a Greek girl in town who invited us to a real Greek party. We went there and met a charming Greek couple my age. They askedContinue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 17July1971: Othos, Karpathos, Greece: The Most Beautiful Greek Island Yet!”

Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 13August1970: West Berlin, Germany: In Berlin Shocked By The Wall
We arrived in Munich after a “delightful” trip on a Yugoslav train. It originated in Athens and it was full of TURKS and GREEKS. The filth was incredible. No food or drinks and the toilets were beyond description. We left at 4:30 a.m. and arrived at 2:30 p.m. to a beautiful hotel dirty and tired.Continue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 13August1970: West Berlin, Germany: In Berlin Shocked By The Wall”

Dear Barbara: If you could see us now you would wonder what is coming off. We left Crete yesterday for Skiros which is 8 hours by sea from the Greek mainland. No rooms were available so we slept in a person’s backyard under a grape arbor. We have no choice but to wait for aContinue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 28July1971: Skiros, Greece: Old And Very Clever Husband and Young Wife”
