RKS 2025 CANADIAN WINE: Stag’s Hollow 2022 Renaissance Merlot

Stag’s Hollow Winery celebrates 30 years of British Columbia winemaking in 2025. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, the winery has reimagined its Renaissance Merlot 2022 label to feature three exclusive ‘Art Series’ labels, each capturing the essence of the Stag’s Hollow estate in Okanagan Falls, BC. The depiction on each label, created by local artistsContinue reading “RKS 2025 CANADIAN WINE: Stag’s Hollow 2022 Renaissance Merlot”

RKS 2025 CANADIAN Wine: Stag’s Hollow 2022 Syrah from Beautiful British Columbia: An Affordable Canadian Côte-Rôtie????

The standard slogan, now gradually disappearing, on British Columbia license plates was “Beautiful British Columbia”. What is not disappearing on the shelves of state monopoly liquor distributor in the province of Ontario (LCBO) are the wines of British Columbia because there were so few of them anyways so not much to disappear. As American winesContinue reading “RKS 2025 CANADIAN Wine: Stag’s Hollow 2022 Syrah from Beautiful British Columbia: An Affordable Canadian Côte-Rôtie????”

RKS 2025 Canadian Wine: Cooper’s Hawk Talon Red

I have been a fan of wines from the Lake Erie North Shore (LENS) appellation in Ontario for quite some time. I go back so far I remember the first wine from Cooper’s Hawk I reviewed was a Chardonnay and these guys were so new it wasn’t even VQA. Then fame crept up on LENSContinue reading “RKS 2025 Canadian Wine: Cooper’s Hawk Talon Red”

RKS 2025 Wine: Armenian Wine: The Next Great Hope? Not Enough Volume in the Market to Make That Determination

Wine producing countries and their subregions, such as Armenia, have a scarce presence in Ontario with a state monopoly controlling all wines flowing into the province except for the miserable duty-free wine quotas a traveller can bring into Canada from abroad or “smuggle” in from other provinces. There is no free Canadian interprovincial wine trade.Continue reading “RKS 2025 Wine: Armenian Wine: The Next Great Hope? Not Enough Volume in the Market to Make That Determination”

RKS 2024 Wine: Malivoire’s Courtney Gamay from Niagara

Many ex-Canada readers are certainly familiar with Niagara Falls as one of Canada’s primo tourist sites. But how many realize Niagara Falls is surrounded by a virtual waterfall of wineries producing world class red, white, sparkling and ice wines. 20 minutes from the Falls, if that, wine country abounds with wineries many of which haveContinue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Malivoire’s Courtney Gamay from Niagara”

RKS 2024 Wine: Boas Quintas Dão’s 2020 Gandarada

I had the pleasure of a recent visit to Boas Quintas in the Dão region of Portugal. After a hearty breakfast we headed off in a slight November fog to the winery. It was strangely North American in set up both in tasting room design and in marketing. Special Christmas combo packages were available ratherContinue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Boas Quintas Dão’s 2020 Gandarada”

RKS 2024 Wine: Greek Wine from Monemvasia Winery

The 2014 Monemvasia Red is a blend of 90% Agiorgitiko and 10% Mavroudi. We do see some Agiorgitiko in Canada but Mavroudi is a grape I am not familiar with. In Greek, at least that which I am familiar with, “mavros” means black. It is no surprise that Mavroudi grapes are nearly black in colour.Continue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Greek Wine from Monemvasia Winery”
