You will not find this wine on the Liquor Control Board of Ontario’s shelves quite yet. If I remember correctly these guys brought us Rosé and Chardonnay in cans. The man behind the scenes is winemaker and master blender Phillip Zorn out of California. Years ago he wowed me with his bargain basement priced PinotContinue reading “Stel+Mar’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon”

British Columbia’s Meyer Family Vineyards 2020 Pinot Noir Rosé: a wine with the heart of a lion
The wine has a dark pink colour. Pinot Noir aromas weakly struggle to break through but remember this is a Pinot Noir Rosé and not a Pinot Noir! Cherry, raspberry and strawberry predominate. This is one of those “serious rosés” meaning there is not a huge amount of fruit on the palate. There is aContinue reading “British Columbia’s Meyer Family Vineyards 2020 Pinot Noir Rosé: a wine with the heart of a lion”
Mayhem in British Columbia Tries its Luck with Wine in a Can
Last year I tried my first wines in a can a Merlot, Rose and Chardonnay. And the production process unfortunately resulted in a rather spritzy result which was corrected quickly in a subsequent batch and the wine was good. I wonder what Mayhem canned wine will taste like. Canned wine is increasing in popularity hereContinue reading “Mayhem in British Columbia Tries its Luck with Wine in a Can”
Meyer Family Vineyards 2020 McLean Creek Road Gewürztraminer
With my head stuck in Alsace a few years ago if you had said Okanagan makes humdinger Gewürztraminer I might have thought you were on your way to Las Vegas with Hunter Thompson. Although in the past three years I have had some exceptional ones from the Okanagan. So knowing that 2020 was a greatContinue reading “Meyer Family Vineyards 2020 McLean Creek Road Gewürztraminer”
Mayhem Rosé and the Great Toronto Goat Theft
Although there seem to be few power Ontario reds in comparison to the Okanagan in British Columbia Ontario rosés can be ferociously good and world class. I have not encountered many rosés from British Columbia. In fact I just had a fantastic rosé from Featherstone Estate Winery in Niagara in Ontario and it merited aContinue reading “Mayhem Rosé and the Great Toronto Goat Theft”
Niagara White, Pink Rosé and Red
The way COVID-19 is threatening the Ontario Health care system and considering the public is subject to a dicey waiting game for first and second doses I have ruled out any significant travel not that Canadians are welcome anywhere these days. So it may be a short trip to Niagara or Prince Edward County afterContinue reading “Niagara White, Pink Rosé and Red”
Mayhem’s Brilliant 2020 Sauvignon Blanc
“Mayhem” could be seen as a misleading name for this Okanagan winery which is a collaboration between two established wine industry siblings – Terry Meyer Stone of Anarchist Mountain Vineyards and her brother JAK Meyer of Meyer Family Vineyards, along with their respective spouses Andrew Stone and Janice Stevens. There is no anarchy or mayhemContinue reading “Mayhem’s Brilliant 2020 Sauvignon Blanc”
Tragically Hip: Great Band But the Wine That Bears its Name?: Canadian Rock n Roll Wine!
Record sales certainly aren’t what they used to be. It is concert revenue and merchandising that bring in the revenue. In this case the Tragically Hip has lent their name to a brand of wines hoping to cash into their name. They may be great musicians but what do they know about wine? Marketing doesContinue reading “Tragically Hip: Great Band But the Wine That Bears its Name?: Canadian Rock n Roll Wine!”
A Couple of Portuguese Reds: Never Ending Quality?
The first one is a Terra Lenta Premium 2018 from the Alentejano region in Portugal. It is a blend of Trincanderia, Aragonez and one of my favourite blenders Alicante Bouschet. On the nose concentrated black cherry with some blackberry and blueberry. There is a bit of red plum and the tiniest bit of cinnamon. NotContinue reading “A Couple of Portuguese Reds: Never Ending Quality?”
Sardinian Wine
We don’t exactly receive an abundance of Sardinian wines on the Liquor Control Board of Ontario shelves. So here is one to try. It is a Cannonau di Sardegna Chuèrra. In colour transparent ruby. As far as aromatics cherry, cranberry and loganberry jam. Playful. On the palate mildly tannic. Compact and light footed sweet redContinue reading “Sardinian Wine”
