So many Portuguese white wines have a functional element of suitability with food and their thinness and acidity making many of them a superb match with seafood a commodity which Portuguese menus are rarely lacking. Rabigato, Viosinho and Arinto do not exactly make stellar sipping wines. I had the privilege of visiting the Dâo wineContinue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Encruzado to the Rescue?”

RKS 2024 Wine: Can Christopher Michael Save Face with Its Chardonnay
The Christopher Michael 2022 Pinot Noir I recently sampled limped in, as vacant faced as it was, with a 73/100. My retail contacts agreed and suggested their Chardonnay and Pinot Gris would fare better. Is that correct? So why not try the Christopher Michael 2021 Chardonnay? Aroma: Apple, pear, cantaloupe with some scant butterscotch andContinue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Can Christopher Michael Save Face with Its Chardonnay”
RKS 2024 Wine: A Rich South African Blend?
Le Riche Richesse from Stellenbosch uses the term “richesse” to denote the wealth of winemaking traditions in Stellenbosch. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Cinsault (13%), Cabernet Franc (13%), Petit Verdot and Merlot. Aroma: Blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, red licorice and milk chocolate. Palate: Fair to say this presents a rich palate. Very solid wine.Continue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: A Rich South African Blend?”
RKS 2024 Film: “Doubles”: Canadian Film Fest
Doubles are a Trinidadian street food. Curried chickpeas (channa) between two pieces of fried flatbread in tamarind and coriander sauce with mango chutney, kuchela and cucumbers. Dhani (Sanjiv Boodhu) who is of Indian descent and his mother run a small roadside stand selling doubles in Trinidad. It is a marginal existence worsened by a robberyContinue reading “RKS 2024 Film: “Doubles”: Canadian Film Fest”
“Travels to a Different Time”: 22July2005: Lagos, Portugal: How Do You Tell a Brit in Portugal? Off to the End of The World
Breakfast at Hotel Tivoli was described as “lavish” on the hotel’s website. We have had some breakfasts in Portugal that were lavish and this buffet breakfast is tasty especially the fried eggs and baked beans. We wouldn’t however call this buffet breakfast as lavish. There are so many Brits here who simply must have theirContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time”: 22July2005: Lagos, Portugal: How Do You Tell a Brit in Portugal? Off to the End of The World”
“Travels to a Different Time”: 20July2005: Estoril, Evora, Portugal: Cholesterol Attack! Man Peeing all Over the Floor
Had our usual late breakfast including for me two omelets. The poor waiter seemed not to understand our omelet order as Andrew’s omelet came with mushrooms which he did not want or order. To avoid wastage being good Canadians I ended up eating my omelet and Andrew’s. Cholesterol attack! A rather late start as weContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time”: 20July2005: Estoril, Evora, Portugal: Cholesterol Attack! Man Peeing all Over the Floor”
RKS 2024 Wine: Greek Wine from Monemvasia Winery
The 2014 Monemvasia Red is a blend of 90% Agiorgitiko and 10% Mavroudi. We do see some Agiorgitiko in Canada but Mavroudi is a grape I am not familiar with. In Greek, at least that which I am familiar with, “mavros” means black. It is no surprise that Mavroudi grapes are nearly black in colour.Continue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Greek Wine from Monemvasia Winery”
RKS 2024 Wine: Argentinian Malbec Exhaustion
Tired of Argentinian Malbec in your red wine glass. Is there hope for Argentinian Criolla? The wine we are trying is Criolla Grande and it has a bad rep. In Karen MacNeil’s “Wine Bible” (second edition) the grape is described as follows: “A widely planted if undistinguished, pinkish-skinned grape related to other criollas, but itsContinue reading “RKS 2024 Wine: Argentinian Malbec Exhaustion”
“Travels to a Different Time”:15July2005 Nazaré, Portugal: A Charming Little Fishing Village it Ain’t
Up for breakfast including that delicious yogurt in a glass topped with local honey. Delicious. A very quick pack up and off we roared in our Renault Megane getting lost on the way in Liera. Densely populated Portugal is for sure with village after village. Clay quarries with many trucks on the road. It wasContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time”:15July2005 Nazaré, Portugal: A Charming Little Fishing Village it Ain’t”

Those Trudeau Children Fed Me an Entire Slice of Pepperoni Pizza or was it the Chunks of that Ivor Wynn Double Cheeseburger?
We headed to Hamilton, Ontario on Saturday night checking in at the Imperial Hotel the night prior to the big Grey Cup game on Sunday at Tim Horton’s Field. After being in so many European cities on promotional tours for the Disney film “Reggie the Egyptian Rescue Dog” I would say Hamilton is a bleakContinue reading ““Reggie the Egyptian Rescue Dog”: The Final Cut :Canadian Grey Cup 108 Years!
