Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 13August1970: West Berlin, Germany: In Berlin Shocked By The Wall

We arrived in Munich after a “delightful” trip on a Yugoslav train. It originated in Athens and it was full of TURKS and GREEKS. The filth was incredible. No food or drinks and the toilets were beyond description. We left at 4:30 a.m. and arrived at 2:30 p.m. to a beautiful hotel dirty and tired.Continue reading “Travels to a Different Time: Travels of My Mother: 13August1970: West Berlin, Germany: In Berlin Shocked By The Wall”

Dear Mother and Meg: At last we are in a civilized country arriving after a nine hour train trip from Bled in Yugoslavia. We arrived at 4:30 p.m. We had a glorious long shower with hot water. RKS History: Grumbling Housewives and the Gestapo

“The inapparent inability of the regime to guarantee either stable prices or a regular supply of daily necessities, including food and clothing, was deeply disconcerting. According to a Gestapo report, the popular mood in the autumn of 1934 was apathetic and gloomy. Irritation with the many petty restrictions of everyday life was widespread and outrightContinue reading “RKS History: Grumbling Housewives and the Gestapo”

“Travels to a Different Time ” : 16June2007: Passau Germany: Bavarian Beer Obsession

Left the house at 17:30 for limo ride to Toronto Pearson Airport. Sent to the wrong line for check in. The new system of checking in online then again checking in again at the airport is idiotic. What time does it save? After waiting in a massive line in the wrong check-in counter as directedContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time ” : 16June2007: Passau Germany: Bavarian Beer Obsession”

“Travels to a Different Time” : 14August1975: Strasbourg, France: Swindler of Canadian Taxpayers

A great sleep then a hot shower. A most unpleasant “stinking hot” day. Got a lift from a Frenchman who was working as a bartender at the Canadian armed forces base in Lahr. We stopped at his flat in Strasbourg which was littered with “hot merchandise” stolen from the base. Booze, cigarettes (cartons of them)Continue reading ““Travels to a Different Time” : 14August1975: Strasbourg, France: Swindler of Canadian Taxpayers”

“Travels to a Different Time” : 13August1975: Lahr, Germany: Meeting up with Fritz

Up for a continental breakfast. Not sure how many more of those I can take. Off to the autobahn via a tram and stupid me forgot to buy a ticket. I thought the conductor would come and take payment. Well “control” came and bawled me out in a nasty voice and threatened to confiscate myContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time” : 13August1975: Lahr, Germany: Meeting up with Fritz”

Woke up in the hospital with all limbs intact. Tidied up and Michael arrived and Heidi shortly after with some breakfast. Heidi had to be in surgery in another hospital some 4 kms away so we drove her there. Michael took me on a tour of Bonn and after we met Heidi for lunch atContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time” : 19August1973: Getting Stared at by the Provincials in Bonn and Ending up in Philadelphia”

“Travels to a Different Time” : 17August1973: Heidelberg, Germany: The German Militaristic Character? Getting Thrown Out of a Bar

Up early to avoid the rush of the bright eyed and bushy tailed Europe on $5 and $ 10 a Day crowd. I get bad vibrations from this place. They seem obsessed with order and precision at this youth hostel. I feel like I am in military barracks and somewhat like a caged animal. ButContinue reading ““Travels to a Different Time” : 17August1973: Heidelberg, Germany: The German Militaristic Character? Getting Thrown Out of a Bar”
