It is not often I review a movie 15 years after it has been released and one that I saw when it was released! And many of you have already seen it so my comments will be brief.
Innovative cinematography at times almost cartoon like. This film took some of its inspiration from a graphic novelist and that is reflected in the cinematography.
The film is still fresh and not dated at all.
Gerard Butler as King Leonidas of Sparta really delivers the goods as a fierce warrior.
It is a Hollywood blockbuster which means I am out of my element as I focus on indie and foreign films but for this one I put my white flag up and happily surrender to an excellent film. The Spartans are tough and tightly knit and face a certain death with Spartan determination and fierceness. The Persians are nasty and strangely clad.
You know the result but are cheering for the Greek underdogs.
Although the enemy of the Spartans in the film are the Persians I venture to say Turkey is Greece’s new Persia.
Greece has many heroes to look up to which in times of conflict may be valuable to muster moral courage.
In case you don’t remember the plot in 480 B.C. Persian King Xerxes sends an army of 100,000 to conquer Greece. At the battle of Thermopylae King Leonidas of the city state of Sparta leads 300 warriors against the massive Persian army and you know the inevitable result.
The film is available through the Hellenic Film Society USA and their website is here https://hellenicfilmusa.org/ This is one of the films the Society is offering to celebrate 200 years of Greek independence.
