RKS Film: “I’m Not in Love”: Most Likely an Appropriate Title!

Rob Lloyd (Al Weaver) is a thirty something Brit living in London with his girl friend Marta (Cristina Catalina). Marta is pining for marriage and children as at 38 her biological clock is ticking. Rob is so busy in his own world and problems he can’t effectively read Marta’s vibes. Or perhaps being uncomfortable with marriage ignores those vibes.

Most of his friends are married and some with children so Rob has an” inside track” as to the ups and downs of marriage. He sees boredom, lack of meaningful sex and a life of imprisonment. One of his patients in his nutrition business is also bitterly complaining about his marriage and is sleeping with his wife’s sister. Then there is his single friend Chris who seems to have a new girlfriend at every turn and is the envy of his married male friends. As the film progresses we see that Chris is just as unhappy as his married friends.

Rob is caught in a decision crossroads as to marriage and children so he tries as an escape and last kick at the can connecting with a previous fling and new ones that magically seem to pop up. But despite ample opportunity declines to go all the way with his newly acquired lady friends. Is it guilt or love? Whatever it is his behaviour alienates Marta.

So Rob takes Marta to the country where his bumbled and insincere proposal has Marta flinging the ring on the floor and going to their room to sob. On a first date with a younger waitress that came on to Rob he gets tangled up with too much tequila, cocaine and a waitress who wants to get involved with a foursome. Marta is frantically trying to call Rob but he does not pick up and Marta tosses him out when he stumbles home. Rob then attempts to win back Marta although the viewer must determine is he sincere and convincing?

I notice of late I am encountering “Anti Rom Com” films which is a romance that doesn’t have a happy ending. I don’t see much comedy in this film but the comedy is low key when you do see it. This is more in the line of a serious film with a deep dive into the illusions of dating and marriage. But is the film anti-romantic? Dear viewer that’s up for you to decide. There is no clear-cut take on that in the last 30 seconds. Is Marta sticking around for the sandwich Rob is getting her?

Al Weaver as Rob does a solid job here as a bumbling, confused and insincere man. Cristina Catalina is equally forceful as a strong willed and unforgiving woman with good instincts!

The film will be available on digital formats on January 25th. You can see a trailer for this Brit film here https://vimeo.com/632635937

The Director is Col Spector and in conjunction with Radha Chakraborty is a co-writer of the screenplay.

RKS Film Rating 87/100.

Reggie the Egyptian Rescue Dog Is Back: Reggie’s Alliance with Kim Jong Un and We Open Trial Restaurants in Portugal

You may recall I delivered a message from President Biden to Kim Jong Un, The Supreme Leader of North Korea, that if the United States provided massive food aid to the starving masses of North Korea then North Korea would scrap its missile launching tests. Well the offer was accepted and it worked well for both countries.

Kim respects tough leaders. For some reason in delivering the message to him from President Biden he was under the impression I am one tough dog. He is right as you don’t survive the streets of Cairo without being both tough and clever.

So I am very puzzled when a North Korean diplomat in Canada approached Bob and set up a Zoom call with Kim, Bob and myself. Why me? I don’t even talk!

Kim knows how much I enjoyed North Korean noodles with chicken (no onions or kimchi) so made an astonishing pitch to us. He proposed the establishment of a Korean noodle restaurant chain using his mother’s secret recipe. It would be established by a Cayman corporation of which Bob and Kim would each have 50% ownership in. The test market would be Portugal and then select European countries. The décor would be simple North Korean peasant.

Lawyers from each side met in New York and finalized the deal. About the only point that was sensitive was Kim’s insistence there be a huge portrait of him in the main seating area of each restaurant. We modified that so it would be hanging over the bathrooms.

In six months our first restaurant opened in the Bolsa in Porto a beautiful historic building which was the old stock exchange building where Bob was knighted into the Order of The Port Brotherhood. Bob, Dylan the Westie and I were there to open our first restaurant. It was an instant smash hit. We called the chain Kim and Reggie’s Korean Noodle Joint. A few weeks later we opened another one in Lisbon up in the hills, then Estoril and Viseu. Each restaurant had a collection of locally sourced wines selected by Bob as he knows the wines of each area well.

Bob, Dylan the Westie and I were at the opening of each restaurant. So we turned it into a bit of a holiday meeting Bob’s contacts in the wine, restaurant and hospitality business. We all ate like kings and saw some incredible sights.

I love the Douro Valley with its spectacular hills and beautiful vineyards. Oh and the food there. I love chicken but I tried some duck casseroles there. I LOVE DOURO DUCK! We also visited a big Port producer Quinta Noval where the “kitchen ladies” cooked a very special dessert of pancakes in a special Port wine sauce. The alcohol has been “cooked out” of the wine and this is a huge treat. I LOVE DOURO PANCAKES IN PORT WINE SAUCE! Bob says these kitchen ladies have prepared meals for him in wineries throughout Portugal. Bob says as a guest he ate what the field workers ate and he has yet to be disappointed. Bob now has an idea to establish a chain of restaurants called “Portuguese Kitchen Ladies!”

Outside of Viseu the Dão wine region often looks like a different planet with huge glacier deposited rocks throughout. We had a wonderful lunch with a wine owner in the Dão named Julia Kemper. I saw some huge mushrooms in a wooded area off her vineyards. Cool! Bob really likes her wine saying it was clean and pure. I think he said it was organic. We also liked Viseu and we saw some sort of student celebration making us feel like we were in a Harry Potter film set. Bob says he really likes Viseu as unlike Lisbon and Porto it is not overrun by cruise line passengers.

I did not like Estoril that much as it is overrun by Brits and foreign money. The Brits jammed our restaurant with many of them rather rude and intolerant saying finally the town had some good Asian food so much more creative than Portuguese food! It wasn’t long ago these Brits were eating boiled mutton, cabbage and potatoes!

Then I also loved a place about 30 minutes from Estoril called Guincho Beach. It is a huge beach with big waves and high winds so it is sort of a European wind surfing capital. Bob has a friend called Petra at a fancy hotel called Fortaleza do Guincho which is an old Moorish fort. Orson Welles, a famous American actor had stayed in our room! Bob said their dining room overlooking the Atlantic is his favourite place to eat in the world because the chef always has a bit of the artist in his blood and his dishes are creatively presented. We loved the beach but of course Dylan the Westie wanted no part of the water so he stayed with Petra. We also walked in a sand dune park just across from our hotel.

On our last night we met with an old friend of Bob called Alexandre who owns a seafood focused restaurant by the river in Porto called Postigo do Carvao. We all loved the simple non pretentious décor and the live music was neat. And the appetizers were fit for a king and the main courses were unbelievable. Bob enjoyed his sea bass with cabbage and those beautifully prepared Portuguese roast potatoes. And there were special desserts prepared for us by Alexandre’s mom. We had a great time listening to the music as Bob and Alexandre caught up. As we were heading to our jet at the Porto Airport after dinner Alexandre prepared an inflight dinner for all of us. Simple filet of chicken with green beans and potatoes for us dogs Bob had octopus in a special Douro wine sauce.

I LOVE PORTUGAL! Bob said we’ll come back soon and start in the North and head down to the Algarve.

Ontario Accelerating Boosters for Education and Child Care Staff

Today, Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, issued the following statement on additional measures and supports to protect children, staff, and families as Ontario responds to the Omicron variant:

“As part of our government’s response to the Omicron variant, we are providing greater access to COVID-19 booster shots for education and child care staff. Starting tomorrow, these staff in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area will have planned access to vaccines at the International Centre in Mississauga as we work with all other public health units to urgently set up more clinics across Ontario. This is in addition to existing vaccine clinics with dedicated access for education and child care staff, including for example at CHEO in Ottawa, and select City of Toronto run clinics.

We are also further strengthening our protections for child care centres by introducing additional safety measures, including stricter screening protocols and deploying non-fit-tested N95 masks to support frontline workers.

Throughout this pandemic, critical staff on the frontlines have continued to carry out their work – from nurses, to personal support workers, to grocery workers and pharmacists – so that we can protect our communities. We owe it to them to ensure their children are cared for during this period, which is why our government is once again providing these frontline and critical workers with free emergency child care for their school-aged children. We thank education and child care staff, operators, and all Ontario families for their hard work, vigilance and kindness through this incredibly difficult time.”

Acceleration of COVID-19 Boosters

To accelerate access to vaccines, starting January 7, the provincial mass vaccination clinic at the International Centre in Mississauga will support priority booking for education staff, including educators, custodial staff, administrative staff, and school bus drivers, and child care staff. The clinic will operate seven days a week, with specific appointments being made available for education and child care staff from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Eligible staff are encouraged to book their appointment through the Provincial Vaccine Booking Line at 1-833-943-3900.

For individuals living outside the GTHA, the Ontario government is working with all public health units (PHUs) to plan and provide access to third doses for education and child care staff. Local PHUs will provide further information on how vaccines can be accessed in their communities as it becomes available. School boards have an opportunity to use schools as a site for vaccination clinics together with PHU partners.

These measures being announced today build on the government’s previous efforts and investments to improve safety in schools during the pandemic. Measures currently in place include:

  • providing optional non-fit-tested N95 masks to all education staff, scheduled to arrive by the end of this week
  • updated and stricter screening requirements to help limit the spread of COVID-19
  • ventilation improvements measures at every school across Ontario, including more than 70,000 HEPA filter units and other ventilation devices already deployed to schools, with an additional 3,000 units being provided
  • access for school boards to $1.6 billion in resources to protect against COVID-19.

Child Care Safety Measures

All child care settings have continuously received quality PPE, additional funding for cleaning, and updated protocols and guidance for staff and families.

The below measures have also been put in place to ensure children, staff, and communities remain as safe as possible:

  • providing optional non-fit-tested N95 masks for staff in licensed child care settings starting January 10, 2022
  • updating and enhancing child care screening measures to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health are working together with an aim of making more rapid-antigen tests available to support the ongoing operations of child-care centres, and schools when they return to in-person learning.

Emergency Child Care Eligibility

Starting January 10, 2022, the following workers are eligible for free emergency child care:

  • health care workers, including but not limited to doctors, nurses, health care providers and those who work in long-term care and retirement homes, as well as individuals who manufacture or distribute medical/pharmaceutical supplies

Big Pharma
riding on the profit kharma
you said initially the vaccine was 96% effective but you never mentioned any time frame
sneaky bastards playing the profit game?
Now suddenly where has your great wisdom slithered?
we’ve been dithered
two jabs are nowhere near the 96% keeping the virus at bay
three jabs now is not a question of defeating the virus but simply keeping out of a hospital stay

RKS Film: “JonBenét’s Tricycle”; Compelling and Chilling

Many of us may remember the murder of JonBenét Ramsey in Boulder Colorado years ago. The murder has not been solved and as we progress through the documentary there is a strong assumption made the crime scene was contaminated by inept police not used to investigating murders in Boulder. Then a spat between a plea bargain obsessed District Attorney and Boulder police did nothing to advance the investigation. DNA testing was also bungled.

So we start this documentary focusing on ephemera collector Andrew Novick who has JonBenét’s tricycle and in addition has a garage full of ephemera. We are challenged as to whether Novick is a hoarder or a pop culture “collector”. That is a discussion you may wish to delve into.

The documentary moves beyond the quirky ephemera collector Andrew Novick to a more critical analysis of a bungled murder investigation. Psychics and paranormal personalities add their often chilling and accurate observations of the death of 6 year old JonBenét.

The documentary examines pop culture’s obsession with tragedy and horror and challenges you about what you think about this. Psychics are used to determine what they feel about the trike and they are nibling around the edge. Their observations are accurate if not a bit fuzzy.

It is amazing how JonBenét’s trike as an image of pop culture in America has spawned a rich and sick tale of tabloid trash.

The end result is no conclusions and of course no convictions despite a parade of suspicious characters.

The documentary is provocative, tragic, disgusting, haunting, fascinating, captivating, obscene and outrageous.

Initially you may think this is on the edge of reality but stick with it and enjoy the ride. Officially one supposes the investigation has concluded in an inept fashion but the poor soul of JonBenét deserves an answer and the truth and until then can her soul ascend to where it belongs.

You can catch the tailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2_iwyzpMA8

Andrew Novick is the director of his own film.

Now available on various VOD platforms.

As a closing remark are you drawn in by the name JonBenét Ramsey and the picture of her trike? Answer that question before watching the documentary and you’ll understand the documentary. Very spooky recreations of her riding her trike which Novick rescued from the garbage as well as unopened bag of popcorn. Spooky!

Reggie the Egyptian Rescue Dog is Back: Will the Canadians Shine at the Academy Awards?

We had an uneventful flight from Dulles to LAX. Nicole had arranged for a limo to take us to her Malibu home and when we arrived at her spectacular home the housekeeper took us to the beach guest house and then returned with a huge platter of sushi. Nicole, Mr. Urban and their children Faith and Sunday were out at a party but Nicole left us a note welcoming us and that she and her family were looking forward to meeting us for breakfast at the main house. We had our sushi and went for an evening walk on the beach. Dylan the Westie hates water with a passion so we stayed a good distance from the water. Oh it is so calming to smell the saltwater and hear the waves! Thank goodness there are no saltwater crocodiles in Malibu!

We were so very tired we were in bed sound asleep by 10 p.m. which is 1 a.m. Toronto time. We awoke to a beautiful sunny day. Nicole gave us a call and we headed up to the main house for breakfast. It was great seeing Nicole again! Mr. Urban is a friendly guy and her children Faith and Sunday are well mannered and right after breakfast the children take us to the grounds to chase tennis balls. The humans chat away drinking tea. Nicole tells us we have a press conference at a nearby hotel at three with me, Dylan the Westie, Mr. Gordon Lightfoot, Martin Malivoire, Russell Crowe and Nicole. I have been in so many of these media scrums they rarely excite me. The usual questions. Been there done that! Word is out about our Presidential Medal of Honour. At the entrance of the hotel there are hundreds of children wanting to see me and Dylan the Westie. Nicole’s management team hands out pictures of me and Dylan the Westie with our paw prints on them! Nicole is a very smart lady and has a great head for business.

Nicole has invited Mr. Gordon Lightfoot, Martin Malivoire and Russell Crowe for dinner in a private dining room in nearby ritzy restaurant. And yes Mr. Gordon Lightfoot starts the evening off by singing “Paco A Girl’s Best Friend” and then Mr. Urban and Mr. Gordon Lightfoot sing and play “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” like never heard before. They had been rehearsing that a few days earlier. Mr. Gordon Lightfoot and Mr. Urban are going to collaborate on Mr. Urban’s new album!

We have a quiet breakfast in our beach house prepared by Nicole’s housekeeper. We have another walk on the beach and poor Bob gets a sunburn so his face looks like a cherry! We all have a short nap and prepare for the big night. Bob and Fay look really snazzy and Fay has her make-up and hair done by a well-known Hollywood make-up artist. Dylan the Westie and I have a bath and a good brush. We dogs decided we want to wear our Hamilton Tiger Cats jersey to give Hamilton a big shout out to the huge audience watching the Oscars.

Nicole looks smashing! We hop into the limo and go to something called the Red Carpet which is jammed full of movie stars, models and celebrities. Fay is holding me and Bob is holding Dylan the Westie. Many ask Bob about the Hamilton Tiger Cats jersey not surprising as they know little about Canadian football.

Bob takes us for a walk just before the televised event begins and we are surrounded by eager fans wishing us the best.

The lights dim and we are live!

We hold our breath as the nominees for best song are announced. And the winner is…….Gordon Lightfoot for “Paco A Girl’s Best Friend”! Mr. Gordon Lightfoot grabs me and takes me on the stage. He has 90 seconds to speak to the world. “I would like to thank the Academy. I would not be here without the inspiration that Reggie has given me. A street dog from Cairo who has conquered the hearts of millions. “Paco a Girl’s Best Friend” is my biggest hit ever. Reggie I love you!” He then hoists me up over his head to thunderous applause.

Then it is the best special effects award. And the winner is Martin Malivoire for “A Dog Saved My Life”! Canada is cleaning up! That special effects fight between me and the saltwater crocodile was a masterpiece said Variety Magazine.

Then for best supporting actor…” And the winners are Dylan the Westie and Rick Mercer.” We Canadians are red hot!

Is it my turn next? And the winner for best actor is Reggie the Egyptian Rescue Dog and Russell Crowe. This is unreal. Wake me up please! Russell says, “Thank you Academy members. I was doing Reggie’s voice and there was such a range of emotions trying to portray them was perhaps the most difficult job in my career. Reggie is super intelligent and at times I thought he was a human. After working with him for 4 months I know he is embarrassed and very shy but both of us thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

And the winner for Best Actress is Nicole Kidman for “A Dog Saved My Life”. The crowd erupts but there is a stir. Why is Nicole walking up the stairs in the wrong direction? What is the matter? Nicole has come to get us and she puts a double leash and takes Dylan the Westie and I to the stage. We sit at her feet. Nicole speaks, “I have had a close working relationship with Reggie and his pal Dylan the Westie. At Reggie’s screen test I knew this was the dog for the film. Obedient and he acted like he understood the human language and knowing him I think he understands us humans sometimes better than we know ourselves. Reggie and Dylan you have done yourselves proud. A very special thanks to my husband and two children here tonight for being without me as we filmed for 4 months in Darwin.”

The crowd is up on its feet chanting “REGGIE. DYLAN. NICOLE.”

What a party afterwards! Dylan the Westie and I feel like movie stars. No wait. WE ARE MOVIE STARS! We meet so many famous people. Robert de Niro wants to have us visit him in New York. Countless offers are made for film projects and Bob collected some 65 business cards. It is all a blur. Then the room goes silent and an announcement is made to watch the screens in the room. God bless his soul it is our friend Joe Biden who congratulates everyone in the room and gives a special shout out to “my good friends” Dylan and Reggie. This stuns most of the people in the room not knowing that two dogs are good friends of the American President.

At two in the morning the limo comes to take us back to Malibu. Dylan the Westie and I are so exhausted when we get back home Bob and Fay had to carry two sleeping dogs back to their doggie beds with a presidential seal on them.

We have a farewell breakfast and drive off to Palm Springs for a few days rest. Before we leave Bob and Fay invite Nicole and her family to our Toronto home for Canadian Thanksgiving. Joe and Jill Biden have also been invited. This may work!

Golf and Your Mental Game: The Wisdom and Cowardice of Fear

Suppose you are 200 yards from the green and over the creek you must go to reach it. You will need an awesome shot. The carrot is being dangled! You are fearful if you don’t have enough distance in the creek you go. If you come in too fast and low you’ll skid off the green into the sand trap. You can look at the situation two ways. Fear has set in as you have doubts as to your ability to softly land on the green. Could this be all your experience supercomputing in your head telling you the odds are you won’t make it over the creek? Is this your golf wisdom kicking in? Or could it simply be cowardice and the unwillingness to face a challenge. I suppose it depends on your mindset. Are you a prisoner of your fear or are you wise because your past experience leans toward your inability to clear the creek? That shot may lead to your wisdom kicking in and laying up. Is this cowardice or wisdom? Make your decision and live with it. At least in this situation you felt you had a chance. Where will your mindset lead you?

On the other hand there is a situation where a slice on the tee over some very tall trees will land you on the green. But you need a spectacular and highly unlikely shot to clear those trees. In this case you realize although you enjoy the challenge the odds of making such a shot are virtually impossible so fear may be leading to wisdom. The risk is so great it could be seen as stupid trying to make such a shot

Then there is the situation where your score has tanked and you have nothing to lose by trying to make that impossible shot. Through your desperation you are going to challenge yourself and add to your golf memory bank which will be data you can rely on in the future.

All this points to the mental nature of a golf game. You are going to have to continually evaluate your skill against the risk and probabilities. Are you now seeing how much of a mental and emotional game golf can be!
